The 12 Best Rest Camps in Kruger National Park (2026)

Updated November 2026 · 12 picks

The best rest camps in Kruger National Park in 2026 are Lower Sabie for river views and big game, Satara for lions on the central plains, Olifants for its clifftop view, Skukuza for facilities and access, and Letaba for elephants. All 12 main rest camps are run by SANParks and booked directly through sanparks.org.

Kruger's 12 main rest camps are fenced, self-catering villages run by SANParks, with chalets, bungalows, huts, safari tents and campsites, plus a shop, fuel and usually a restaurant. They are the classic way to see Kruger: you drive yourself between the gates' opening and closing times, and book guided sunrise, sunset and night drives at the camp.

We ranked them on the game viewing around each camp, the setting, and facilities. All are $ on our scale (under about $150 per person per night), though cottages and guest houses cost more than huts and campsites. Kruger's daily conservation fee is charged on top.

1. Lower Sabie Rest Camp — Southern Kruger, Sabie River

A riverfront deck over the Sabie and some of the park's richest game country.

$ BudgetBest for First-timers · Families

Lower Sabie sits on the Sabie River, one of the few rivers that flows year-round through Kruger, looking across to the Lebombo Mountains. Animals come down to drink in front of the camp all day, and the roads to Crocodile Bridge and Skukuza run through some of the park's best predator country.

Units range from huts and safari tents to riverfront cottages, and the restaurant deck over the river is one of the best seats in Kruger.

Good to know: Book a riverfront unit as early as SANParks allows; the drive along the H4-1 river road toward Skukuza is the classic morning loop.

$ BudgetBest for Wildlife lovers · Photographers

Satara sits in an excellent game-viewing area where the bush is open and grazing animals are plentiful, which draws lions, cheetah and hyena. SANParks calls it a busy camp, and not without reason.

The camp has a rustic feel, with most units laid out in circles, prolific bird life and lions roaring at night. Roads to the N'wanetsi area and Timbavati River are classic predator drives.

Good to know: Leave as the gate opens and take the S100 along the N'wanetsi; it is one of the best-known lion roads in Kruger.

Frequently asked questions

Which Kruger rest camp is best for first-timers?

Skukuza or Lower Sabie. Both are in the south, where game densities are highest and the drive from Johannesburg or Kruger Mpumalanga airport is shortest, and both have restaurants, shops and guided activities.

Which Kruger camp has the best view?

Olifants, which sits on a hilltop several hundred feet above the Olifants River. Lower Sabie's deck over the Sabie River and Letaba's riverfront are close behind.

How far ahead should I book a Kruger rest camp?

SANParks opens bookings 11 months ahead, and riverfront units in popular camps such as Lower Sabie, Olifants and Satara go fast for South African school holidays and long weekends. Book as early as you can, and check sanparks.org for cancellations closer to the date.

What is the difference between a rest camp, a satellite camp and a bushveld camp?

Main rest camps are the big camps with shops, fuel and restaurants. Satellite camps (such as Tamboti, Maroela, Balule and Malelane) are small camps attached to a main camp, often with fewer facilities. Bushveld camps are small, quieter self-catering camps with no shop or restaurant and roads restricted to residents.

Which Kruger camp is best for lions?

Satara, on the open central plains, is the camp most associated with lions; Crocodile Bridge's 'Southern Circle' and the area around Lower Sabie are also known for predators.
